May the piece go in the dryer?
As a rule no. Heat harms the coating. The care label names exceptions; with some finishes low warmth even revives the water repellency. Hung up, these goods dry faster than most cottons anyway.
Is the fabric breathable?
That depends on the finish. Softshell and membrane fabrics let moisture out from inside, simple coatings do not. For sport the product details are worth a look.
Is the finished piece waterproof?
The fabric is, the seams are not. Every needle makes holes. To sew genuinely watertight you seal the seams with tape or place them where water does not stand.
Do I have to finish the edges?
Usually not — fleece, softshell and boiled wool do not fray. On woven coated fabrics you do, since the backing loosens at the edge. When in doubt, a look at the cut edge after the first wash decides.
