On a zip they serve a practical purpose: a larger pull is easier to grasp than the bare slider – on children's jackets and with gloves on, a noticeable difference.

They are usually attached with a ring or snap hook. Make sure the ring is closed; open rings catch in knitted fabric and pull threads.

Sewn on charms sit more firmly but cannot be swapped. For bags that get reworked often, the clip on version is the more flexible choice.

On children's clothing, watch the fixing and the size. Small parts that can come loose do not belong on things for the very young.
