Many pompoms have a snap fastener or a loop. That lets them be removed before washing, which matters especially with faux fur – the pile mats quickly in a machine.

To sew one on, catch the underside several times, ideally with strong thread. A single stitch tears out as soon as someone pulls, and someone always pulls.

On a hat the pompom sits centred on the crown. Mark the spot beforehand, as a crooked pompom is immediately obvious.

For toddlers, attach especially firmly and check regularly. A loose pompom is a small part that has no business near a mouth.
