Unlike structural rivets, decorative ones usually sit singly or in rows as a pattern. Their job is visual, but they still hold layers together when placed in the right spot.

Set them with a setting tool on a firm surface. The post length has to match the material thickness: one or two millimetres proud, or the post bends or fails to engage.

On thin fabrics rivets need reinforcement, or they pull out. A piece of faux leather or firm interfacing behind the spot spreads the pull.

On clothing, remember that rivets are hard. Where they touch the skin or where you lean against them, they are uncomfortable.

Which post length do I need?

Enough for the post to pass through all layers and stand one or two millimetres proud. Too short does not engage, too long bends while hammering and the rivet sits crooked.

Do I need reinforcement?

On thin fabrics, yes. Without it the rivet tears out over time. A piece of faux leather or firm interfacing behind the spot spreads the pull over more area.

Can I set rivets on clothing?

Yes, but not everywhere. They are hard and uncomfortable where they touch the skin or where you lean against them – bags and belts suit them better.
