The fastening comes in two parts: the toggle with its loop and the counterpart with the eye. Both are sewn on, usually onto leatherette or fabric tabs that spread the pull over a larger area.

Placement decides the look. Set too close the toggles look crowded, set too far apart the jacket gapes between them. Four or five on a coat front is usual.

Attach by hand with strong thread or by machine, provided the tab fits under the presser foot. A reverse bar tack at each corner takes the strain.

On children's jackets toggles are practical, as they are easier to grip than a zip. Just check that the loops are firmly attached.

How many toggles does a coat need?

Four or five on the front is usual. Too few let the jacket gape between them, too many look crowded and make dressing harder.

Should I sew toggles on by hand?

Either works. By hand with strong thread is more secure, by machine faster – provided the tab fits under the presser foot. Bar tacks at every corner matter.

Are they suitable for children's clothes?

Yes, they are easier to grip than a zip. Check regularly that toggles and loops are firmly attached, as they get pulled hard.
