Chalk marks on fabric and brushes out afterwards — the oldest answer and still one of the best. The size comes to 81 mm. Sold as a single item. Made from plastic, metal, chalk powder.
For alterations to finished clothes a line on the fabric shows where to shorten and where to let out. Light cloth calls for a dark marking, dark cloth for a light one — which is why most sewing boxes hold two colours side by side. What has been marked should be sewn before long; if the cut pieces lie around for weeks, some lines fade by themselves. The pack states the size, so buying more later stays easy.

Frequently asked questions
Does the marking come off again?
Depending on the type with water, with heat or by brushing out. The pack says which applies; a test on a hidden spot shows it within a minute on your own fabric.
Which fabrics does it suit?
Most wovens and knits. On very absorbent or coated goods every marking behaves differently, so a test on a scrap stays the safest route. On velvet and towelling it is better to mark on the reverse.
How long does a line stay visible?
Long enough for cutting and sewing, but not forever. If cut pieces lie around for weeks, redraw shortly before sewing. Light and warmth speed up fading, so keep pieces away from the window.
May I iron over a marking?
Better not while it is still needed: heat can fix some lines and erase others at once. Sew first, press afterwards is the safe order.
