Holding power is the second advantage. Several layers of canvas or a bag base with interfacing are hard to tame with pins, while a clip holds them reliably.

The flat underside keeps the work lying level on the table. Many clips also carry measurement marks there, giving a rough guide to the seam allowance.

Work as you would with pins: set the clips across the seam and remove them just before the presser foot. Sewing over a clip is not possible – it is too thick and breaks the needle.

For fine, soft fabrics clips are less suitable. They grip at single points and the fabric can shift between them; pins hold more evenly there.

When are clips better than pins?

Can I sew over clips?

No. The clip is too thick and the needle breaks. Remove it just before the presser foot, exactly as you would a pin.

Are clips suitable for thin jersey?

Only to a degree. They grip at single points and the fabric can shift between two clips. With fine, soft fabric pins hold more evenly.
