Description
An awl does not cut, it pushes. The smooth, tapered point forces the threads of a weave apart rather than severing them. The hole closes again once the awl is withdrawn, unlike a cut. Use it to pierce for eyelets and rivets, to open buttonholes, and as an extended finger when guiding fabric under the machine needle. The handle is wood, so it sits warm and secure in the hand. Because the hole closes again, you can check where an eyelet should sit before setting it.
What Awl with Wooden Handle is suitable for
- Piercing for eyelets and rivets
- Opening buttonholes
- Guiding fabric under the needle
- Shaping corners and seams
Frequently asked questions
Why not simply cut?
A cut severs threads and the fabric frays on from there. An awl only pushes the threads aside; they settle back together afterwards and the spot stays strong.
Which fabrics does it suit?
Anything woven. With knits such as jersey take care: a hole forced too roughly can start a ladder. Widen gently and check as you go instead.
Can I pierce leather with it?
Thin leather yes, with some pressure. Thick leather needs an awl with a ground cutting edge that slices rather than pushes. This one is built for textiles.
How does the point keep its shape?
Store it dry so the iron does not rust. If the point goes blunt or picks up a burr, fine abrasive paper smooths it again without losing the taper.
