Sewing tips

An 8 mm cord is the sturdy choice for anything drawn closed in plain sight: hoodies and sweat jackets for teens and adults, parkas, anoraks, joggers, gym bags and duffel bags. The thick, round braided cord sits well in the hand, hardly twists and makes a clear statement – tone on tone or as a contrast colour.

This thickness needs a generous casing: sew it clearly wider than the cord so it glides easily and the seam is not strained when you pull. Eyelets, grommets and cord stoppers should have an opening of at least 8 mm, ideally a little more. A large safety pin or a bodkin with a wide eye makes threading easier. Cotton cords draw in slightly in their first wash, so prewash them together with your fabric.

For children's garments, remember that drawstrings in hoods and around the neck are not permitted on clothing for small children; stitched-on decorative cords, ribbing or press fasteners are the safe alternative there. For bags, pouches, macramé and decor, the 8 mm cord is a versatile notion.

Frequently asked questions

What is an 8 mm cord best used for?

Hoods and waistbands on hoodies, sweat jackets and joggers for teens and adults, parkas and anoraks, as well as gym bags, duffel bags and totes. The sturdy cord is easy to grip and clearly visible.

How wide does the casing need to be?

Clearly wider than the cord – roughly two centimetres when stitched is a good guide. In a casing that is too narrow the cord snags when pulled and strains the seam.

Will the cord fit my eyelets and cord stoppers?

Check the inner diameter of your eyelets and the opening of the cord stopper. Both should be at least 8 mm, ideally a little more. If the cord runs doubled, you will need correspondingly more room.

How do I stop the ends from fraying?

The easiest options are knots, cord ends or end caps in a matching size. Alternatively, whip the end with thread. Pure cotton cannot be heat sealed.

Can I use cords in children's clothing?

Drawstrings in hoods and around the neck are not permitted on clothing for small children for safety reasons. Use flat stitched-on decorative cords, ribbing or press fasteners there. For gym bags and totes, cords are no problem.

Does a cotton cord shrink in the wash?

Cotton draws in slightly during its first wash. Prewash the cord together with your fabric before threading it in, and the length will still be right after washing.
