To thread, fasten the pin to the end of the tape and push it through the channel bit by bit while easing the fabric along behind it. Pin the other end in place so it does not disappear inside.

Size depends on what has to pass through. A large pin pulls wide elastic securely but gets in the way in a narrow channel; use a small one there.

As a fastening, safety pins hold fabric layers together without opening – practical at fittings, on costumes and wherever a pin would prick.

Choose pins that close firmly. Pins that spring open on their own get lost in the channel and force you to cut it open again.

Which size should I use?

One that still passes comfortably through the channel. Large pins hold wide elastic more securely but catch easily in narrow channels; a small one is better there.

What if the pin opens inside the channel?

Usually a pin with a firmer closure helps. If it happens, pull the tape back and start again – the channel can be cut open, but that leaves a repair.
