Faux Leather Bias Binding

Faux leather bias binding finishes edges with a firm, wipe clean surface. It does not fray, holds its shape and sets a clear accent on bags, baskets and decorative pieces.

Unlike textile tapes, faux leather adds more bulk and gives very little. It is therefore less suited to tight curves; on straight edges and wide arcs it looks clean and well made.

Pins leave visible holes that stay. Work exclusively with clips and baste at most within the seam allowance.

Sew with a universal or leather needle and a longer stitch. A teflon foot stops the surface sticking to the presser foot and the feed stalling.

Do not press directly. The surface melts or distorts; if you need edges flat, press them down with a bone folder or hold them with clips.

Frequently asked questions

Is faux leather binding suitable for tight curves?

Only to a degree, as it barely gives. On necklines and tight curves it wrinkles; for straight edges and wide arcs it works well.

Why can I not use pins?

Because needle marks stay visible. Faux leather does not close up again like a woven fabric. Use clips, or pin only within the seam allowance.

How do I clean a faux leather edge?

Wipe with a damp cloth. Machine washing and high temperatures can damage the surface; on bags, wiping is usually enough anyway.
