The pile lies in one direction. Viewed against the pile, velvet looks darker and richer, with the pile lighter. All pattern pieces therefore have to lie the same way, or the finished piece looks patchy.

While sewing, the layers slip easily, because the pile acts like a glide layer. Clips instead of pins, a walking foot and slow sewing keep the pieces in place.

Press from the reverse only, ideally over a towel or a needle board. Direct pressure on the pile flattens it and leaves shiny marks that can hardly be repaired.

Why do I have to mind the pile direction on velvet?

Because the pile reflects light differently depending on its direction. If pieces are laid differently, one half of the garment looks lighter than the other – which is immediately obvious.

How do I press velvet without damaging the pile?

From the reverse and with steam from a slight distance, without pressing down. A towel underneath receives the pile so it is not flattened.

Is velvet difficult to sew?

It asks for patience, no more. The layers slip, so clips and a walking foot help. Sew slowly and test your settings on a scrap first.
