The advantage is obvious: you can make binding from the same fabric the project is sewn from. On quilts and bags that often looks better than a bought tape in an approximate colour.

Makers come in several widths. The fabric strip has to be cut about twice as wide as the finished tape – the exact figure is given with each tool.

The bias cut matters. A strip cut on grain can be folded just as well but stays rigid and will not follow curves.

Pull slowly and press immediately behind the maker. Pulling too fast gives uneven folds that cannot be corrected later.

How wide should I cut the fabric strip?

About twice the width of the finished tape you want. The exact figure is given with each maker, as the fold width varies slightly between models.

Does the strip have to be cut on the bias?

For curves, yes. A strip cut on grain can be folded but stays rigid and wrinkles at curves. For straight edges it is fine.

Is a maker worth it if I rarely bind edges?

If you need binding in a particular colour or fabric, yes. For occasional standard work, bought bias binding is the quicker route.
