Polyester Bias Binding

Polyester bias binding hardly shrinks and stays colourfast. That makes it the safe choice for pieces washed often and hot, and for anything used outdoors.

Its big advantage over cotton is dimensional stability. A cotton binding contracts in the wash and gathers the bound edge; polyester stays as it is.

Moisture bothers the material little as well. It dries quickly and does not go mouldy, which suits it to outdoor bags, bathroom textiles and pram accessories.

While sewing, the binding behaves a little more slippery than cotton. A fine needle and clips instead of pins keep it neatly in place.

The ends fray and can be sealed with a flame. Melt only briefly, or a hard ridge forms that scratches against the skin.

Frequently asked questions

Why polyester rather than cotton?

Because it does not shrink and stays colourfast. On items washed hot, a cotton binding gathers the edge while polyester keeps its length.

Can I press polyester binding?

Only at low temperature. Polyester melts under heat; a pressing cloth and the synthetics setting are essential if the binding needs smoothing.

Is it suitable for outdoor items?

Very much so. It dries quickly, does not go mouldy and barely fades in the sun – which is why it is used for bags, tent accessories and pram textiles.
