Bias binding gets cut across its grain, which is exactly where its use comes from: it hugs a curve without buckling. This one is Piping Tape in Yellow, made from 100 % cotton.
Attach it across two passes: its narrower side onto that right face first, sitting inside its fold, then wrap everything around, topstitching close along its edge. That second pass catches your first side.
Allow your edge's length plus roughly a hand's width, joining both ends. Around curves, reckon more generously, because binding gets eased slightly while sewn. Stitched flat, this same binding gives a clean stripe across any surface — over a bag, or facing a sleeve.
What Paspelband Gelb is suitable for
- Necklines plus armholes wanting a clean finish.
- Hems across blankets, table linen alongside bags.
- Facings plus stripes, once binding gets stitched flat.
Frequently asked questions
How do I attach bias binding neatly?
Stitch its narrower side onto that right face first, sitting inside its fold line, then wrap everything around, topstitching close along its edge. Your second pass catches that first side without wandering.
Why is bias binding cut diagonally?
Because only a diagonal cut follows curves without buckling. Straight strips stand away around every bend, while bias cut ones hug a neckline, or an armhole, as though shaped there.
How much binding do I need?
That edge's length plus roughly a hand's width spare, joining both ends. Around curves, allow more, since binding gets eased slightly while sewn, which shifts how much length disappears.
May it also serve as decoration?
Yes, stitched flat it gives a clean stripe across any surface — over bags, or facing a sleeve. Press it first, pin both edges, topstitching each side travelling one direction.
