About this range

Most machine embroidery threads shine. That is how you recognise embroidery from across a room — and it is not always what you want. Frosted Matt takes the other route: Madeira spins ceramic into the polyester fibre, and that ceramic scatters light instead of mirroring it. A design reads calm and even, and the colour stays the same whatever angle you look from.

The second argument is lightfastness. Madeira dyes this range by its own process; embroidery on cushions, bags or anything kept outdoors holds its tone far longer than it would with ordinary embroidery thread.

  • Genuinely matt: 96 % polyester with 4 % ceramic, without any sheen
  • Weight 40: spun a little finer than other threads at this weight — good for small lettering and monograms
  • 500 metres on a re-closable snap spool
  • 40 colours from bright white to black, seven of them neon
  • Washable to 60 degrees, chlorine bleach in moderation, iron at medium temperature

Madeira recommends a machine embroidery needle in size 75 or 80. Mix matt and glossy thread in one design and you get a contrast that no two colours on their own can produce.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Frosted Matt different from ordinary embroidery thread?

The ceramic in the fibre. It scatters light rather than mirroring it and so takes the shine out of the polyester. A design reads calmer, and the colour does not shift when you turn the fabric or hold it into the light.

Which needle and bobbin thread do I need?

Madeira recommends a machine embroidery needle in size 75 or 80. As bobbin thread, a fine bobbin yarn belongs in the case rather than Frosted Matt itself — white under pale fabric, black under dark. That way the back builds up less.

Can the embroidery go in the washing machine?

Up to 60 degrees yes, and chlorine bleach in moderation as well. Iron at medium temperature and rather from the back: pressed directly, the matt surface gets flattened in places and starts to shine.

How do I find the right colour?

By the colour number. It is printed on the spool and stands in the article name, and it is the identity of the tone — by eye alone you rarely hit the same shade again. For a first choice the printed Madeira shade card helps, because matt tones read differently on screen than in the hoop.

Can I combine matt and glossy thread?

Yes, and that contrast is the real appeal: matt areas, glossy outlines. What matters is running both threads at the same stitch density, otherwise the matt part looks thinner than the glossy one.
