A jeans needle in size 90 to 110. It has a stronger point and a sturdier shaft so it does not snap on thick layers. A universal needle does not stand up to the load.
Which thread belongs on the bobbin?
Ordinary sewing thread in a matching colour. This heavy denim thread belongs in the machine as a top thread only; below it would add bulk and upset stitch formation, since the hook must take up more thread.
Does the seam survive washing?
Yes. The thread is polyester, colourfast and strong. A pair of jeans is washed often and warm, and that is exactly what this thread is built for — the topstitching loses neither colour nor strength.
