Description

Black works on nearly any fabric without long comparison. This fastener disappears on dark cloth and draws a deliberate line on pale cloth. Tooth length comes to 40 cm. Lay it against your piece before cutting and you will see at once whether the opening sits right.

These metal teeth carry a rainbow coating and shift tone with the light. Here the fastener is deliberately the focal point. Open the fastener before every crossing seam and push the slider out of the way. If your needle hits the slider or metal teeth it breaks — the commonest cause of a broken needle.

What Separating Zip 40 cm Black is suitable for

  • Waistcoats, because it lies smoothly into the front edge.
  • Softshell jackets, because the fastener carries real function there.
  • Between-season jackets, because they open quickly.

Sewing tips

Frequently asked questions

How do I align both sides?

Lay both halves level and tack before sewing. Let one shift and your jacket stands apart at the hem — with the fastener closed, that shows at once.

Do I need a facing?

It makes the edge tidy and covers the tape. On stretch fabrics reinforce it with interfacing, or your front edge ripples along the tape.

The slider sticks — what helps?

Usually fabric is caught between the teeth; ease it out rather than forcing it. If it still runs stiff, a little candle wax on the teeth helps.

How exactly must the colour match?

On a jacket the fastener lies open, so close inspection pays off here. If unsure, take the next darker shade — or go for deliberate contrast.
