Plum is a dark purple leaning red. On a pale ground it nearly reads black; only close up does the violet show. Tooth length comes to 16 cm. Lay it against your piece before cutting and you will see at once whether the opening sits right.
A plastic coil of 3 mm. It weighs almost nothing and stays flexible enough not to intrude on blouses or dresses. Store it flat and closed, ideally sorted by length. Folded, the tape keeps that crease, and you see it later along the sewn-in edge.

The slider sticks — what helps?
Usually fabric or a thread is caught between the teeth; ease it out rather than forcing it. If it still runs stiff, a little candle wax on the teeth helps.
How exactly must the colour match?
On visible fastenings as closely as possible; on concealed ones a roughly matching tone will do. If unsure, take the next darker shade — one too pale stands out more.
Centred or concealed?
Set centred, both lines of topstitching show evenly; concealed, only one remains visible. Trousers usually take concealed, bags and cushions the centred version.
