Dark grey is the restrained alternative to black. On mid-tone fabrics it draws a line without reading as hard. 20 cm is the length most often needed on children's skirts, inner pockets and standard cushions: long enough to reach in, short enough to vanish into a seam.
A fine plastic coil of 3 mm on a polyester tape. The upper tape end disappears into the seam allowance of your facing or waistband; fold it outwards so it cannot jam under the slider. Sew with a universal needle — never across the coil itself, where a needle breaks.

Sewing tips
- Ein spezieller Nähfuß für nahtverdeckte Reißverschlüsse ist praktisch Pflicht — er rollt die Spirale auf und führt die Naht direkt darunter.
- Der Verschluss wird eingenäht, BEVOR die Naht darunter geschlossen wird. Das ist umgekehrt zum normalen Reißverschluss.
- Vor dem Nähen die Spirale mit dem Bügeleisen auf niedriger Stufe flach ausrollen, dann kommt die Naht nah genug an die Zähne.
- Beide Seiten von oben nach unten nähen, nicht gegenläufig — sonst verzieht sich die eine Seite gegen die andere.
- Am unteren Ende so weit nähen, wie der Fuß kommt, dann den Rest der Naht mit normalem Fuß schließen und die letzten Zentimeter von Hand verriegeln.
- Bei dehnbaren Stoffen ein schmales Formband oder Vlieseline in die Nahtzugabe legen, damit die Kante gerade bleibt.
- Zum Waschen schließen und nicht direkt über den Schieber bügeln.

Frequently asked questions
How do I finish the lower end?
Sew as far as the foot will go, switch to an ordinary zip foot and close the rest of the seam. Backstitch those last centimetres at the join by hand, so nothing gapes.
Can I shorten it?
From the top yes: cut it off, fold the tape into your seam allowance and set a new stop with a few hand stitches. From the bottom you cannot, that is where the fixed stop sits.
Will it show afterwards?
Only the slider. Those teeth lie entirely inside the seam, leaving a closed seam line outside — which is exactly why invisible zips are first choice on dresses and skirts.
What do I do with the upper tape end?
It disappears into the seam allowance of your facing or waistband. Fold it outwards there, so it cannot jam under the slider and your fastener runs right to the top.
