Dark grey is the restrained alternative to black. On mid-tone fabrics it draws a line without reading as hard. 40 cm is the length for shift dresses and anything that will not go over your head. The opening reaches past the hip while the seam still reads closed.
A fine coil, 3 mm wide, on a polyester tape. On stretch fabrics a narrow stay tape in the seam allowance pays off, so your edge will not stretch as you sew or ripple later. Measure the length on your finished pattern piece, not on paper: the stated length is tooth length, and the tape above it disappears into your seam allowance.

Sewing tips
- Ein spezieller Nähfuß für nahtverdeckte Reißverschlüsse ist praktisch Pflicht — er rollt die Spirale auf und führt die Naht direkt darunter.
- Der Verschluss wird eingenäht, BEVOR die Naht darunter geschlossen wird. Das ist umgekehrt zum normalen Reißverschluss.
- Vor dem Nähen die Spirale mit dem Bügeleisen auf niedriger Stufe flach ausrollen, dann kommt die Naht nah genug an die Zähne.
- Beide Seiten von oben nach unten nähen, nicht gegenläufig — sonst verzieht sich die eine Seite gegen die andere.
- Am unteren Ende so weit nähen, wie der Fuß kommt, dann den Rest der Naht mit normalem Fuß schließen und die letzten Zentimeter von Hand verriegeln.
- Bei dehnbaren Stoffen ein schmales Formband oder Vlieseline in die Nahtzugabe legen, damit die Kante gerade bleibt.
- Zum Waschen schließen und nicht direkt über den Schieber bügeln.

Frequently asked questions
Should I press the coil first?
It helps a great deal. Roll the coil flat with an iron on a low setting, then your seam comes close enough to the teeth and the fastener disappears fully into the seam.
Can I shorten it?
From the top yes: cut it off, fold the tape into your seam allowance and set a new stop with a few hand stitches. From the bottom you cannot, that is where the fixed stop sits.
Which colour should I pick?
Since only the slider stays visible, a roughly matching tone suffices. For maximum discretion, take the next darker shade — a fastener too pale stands out more than one too dark.
Is this manageable for beginners?
With the right foot yes; it looks harder than it is. Sew a practice run on two scraps and you will see at once how close the seam comes to the teeth, then work more calmly.
