Description

A clear white with no cream cast. On white or pale fabrics it stays discreet; on dark ones it turns into a design element. 40 cm is the length for shift dresses and anything that will not go over your head. The opening reaches past the hip while the seam still reads closed.

This construction is meant for dresses, skirts and cushions where a zip placket would intrude. Coil 3 mm, tape in 100 % polyester. At the lower end, sew as far as the foot will go, switch to an ordinary zip foot and close the rest of the seam — backstitch those last centimetres by hand, so nothing gapes. Inside, a facing or lining covers your seam allowances and the tape.

What Nahtverdeckte Reißverschlüsse Weiß is suitable for

  • Shift dresses, because this opening reaches past the hip.
  • Slipcovers, because the piece opens wide.
  • Shirt dresses, because this fastener replaces a button placket.

Sewing tips

  • Ein spezieller Nähfuß für nahtverdeckte Reißverschlüsse ist praktisch Pflicht — er rollt die Spirale auf und führt die Naht direkt darunter.
  • Der Verschluss wird eingenäht, BEVOR die Naht darunter geschlossen wird. Das ist umgekehrt zum normalen Reißverschluss.
  • Vor dem Nähen die Spirale mit dem Bügeleisen auf niedriger Stufe flach ausrollen, dann kommt die Naht nah genug an die Zähne.
  • Beide Seiten von oben nach unten nähen, nicht gegenläufig — sonst verzieht sich die eine Seite gegen die andere.
  • Am unteren Ende so weit nähen, wie der Fuß kommt, dann den Rest der Naht mit normalem Fuß schließen und die letzten Zentimeter von Hand verriegeln.
  • Bei dehnbaren Stoffen ein schmales Formband oder Vlieseline in die Nahtzugabe legen, damit die Kante gerade bleibt.
  • Zum Waschen schließen und nicht direkt über den Schieber bügeln.

Frequently asked questions

Should I press the coil first?

It helps a great deal. Roll the coil flat with an iron on a low setting, then your seam comes close enough to the teeth and the fastener disappears fully into the seam.

Which direction do I sew from?

Both sides from top to bottom. Sew them against each other and one half travels against the other, leaving your opening crooked — on dresses that shows at once.

How do I finish the lower end?

Sew as far as the foot will go, switch to an ordinary zip foot and close the rest of the seam. Backstitch those last centimetres at the join by hand, so nothing gapes.

Can I shorten it?

From the top yes: cut it off, fold the tape into your seam allowance and set a new stop with a few hand stitches. From the bottom you cannot, that is where the fixed stop sits.
