Description

A clear white with no cream cast. On white or pale fabrics it stays discreet; on dark ones it turns into a design element. 22 cm suffices for a short back opening on a blouse, or for a zipped compartment in a bag. That opening stays discreet.

This fastener is built as an invisible zip: on the finished piece the coil lies entirely inside the seam, leaving only the slider in view. That coil measures 3 mm, its tape is made from 100 % polyester. Sew it in before closing the seam beneath — the opposite way round from an ordinary zip. An invisible zip foot is practically essential here, since it rolls the coil open and guides your seam right underneath. Without one, your seam stays too far away and the teeth show.

What Nahtverdeckte Reißverschlüsse Weiß is suitable for

  • Skirts with a short opening, because that seam reads closed.
  • Bags with a zipped compartment, because the tape stays narrow.
  • Blouses fastening at the back, because nothing adds bulk.

Sewing tips

  • Ein spezieller Nähfuß für nahtverdeckte Reißverschlüsse ist praktisch Pflicht — er rollt die Spirale auf und führt die Naht direkt darunter.
  • Der Verschluss wird eingenäht, BEVOR die Naht darunter geschlossen wird. Das ist umgekehrt zum normalen Reißverschluss.
  • Vor dem Nähen die Spirale mit dem Bügeleisen auf niedriger Stufe flach ausrollen, dann kommt die Naht nah genug an die Zähne.
  • Beide Seiten von oben nach unten nähen, nicht gegenläufig — sonst verzieht sich die eine Seite gegen die andere.
  • Am unteren Ende so weit nähen, wie der Fuß kommt, dann den Rest der Naht mit normalem Fuß schließen und die letzten Zentimeter von Hand verriegeln.
  • Bei dehnbaren Stoffen ein schmales Formband oder Vlieseline in die Nahtzugabe legen, damit die Kante gerade bleibt.
  • Zum Waschen schließen und nicht direkt über den Schieber bügeln.

Frequently asked questions

In what order do I sew?

The opposite way round from an ordinary zip: first sew the fastener into the open edges, then close the seam below it. Sew first and insert after, and you will never get it neatly under.

Should I press the coil first?

It helps a great deal. Roll the coil flat with an iron on a low setting, then your seam comes close enough to the teeth and the fastener disappears fully into the seam.

Which length do I need?

Measure the opening on your finished pattern piece, not on the paper pattern. The stated length is tooth length; the tape above it disappears into your seam allowance.

How do I care for the finished piece?

Close the fastener before every wash, so the tape will not distort and the teeth cannot catch in other laundry. Never press directly over the slider.
