Baumwoll Jersey Solid

Cotton jersey is the most used knitted fabric of all. It stretches across the grain, sits softly against the body and carries shirts, dresses, leggings and children's clothes as readily as cuffing and facings. Here the solid shades stand beside the marled ones, whose yarn is spun from fibres of different depth — from a distance a mixed shade with depth that hides marks of wear.

Jersey is knitted rather than woven. The loops give way and spring back, which is why garments need no zips and still fit.

Solid or marled, it goes with everything: as a main fabric, as a companion to a print, as a facing or backing. Anyone sewing a printed jersey will find the matching shade for neckline and sleeves here.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch or an overlocker. The cut edge curls – that is normal and disappears once the seam is closed. Wash the fabric before cutting.

Which needle do I need for jersey?

A jersey or stretch needle. Its rounded point pushes the loops aside instead of piercing them. With a universal needle, holes and skipped stitches easily occur.

Why does my seam ripple?

Usually the fabric was pulled while sewing. Guide it rather than pull it, and reduce the presser foot pressure if needed. A walking foot keeps both layers even.

How do I find the direction of stretch?

Pull on an edge: across the grain jersey gives noticeably, lengthways hardly at all. When cutting, the stretchy direction has to run around the body, otherwise the piece sits too tight.
