Beige is the calmest natural shade: between sand and light brown, making no statement of its own. It subordinates itself to any fabric rather than standing out. Tooth length comes to 50 cm. Lay it against your piece before cutting and you will see at once whether the opening sits right.
Instead of a coil, separate 5 mm metal teeth sit along the tape here. That looks more robust and stands up to coarser fabrics. Insert it with a zip foot so your seam runs close beside the teeth. Three to five millimetres is right: closer and the slider brushes it, further and the fabric throws a ripple.

Sewing tips

- Reißverschlussfuß verwenden. Mit ihm kommt die Naht dicht an die Zähne, ohne dass der Fuß aufläuft.
- Vor dem Annähen beide Seiten gleich hoch ausrichten und heften. Verschiebt sich eine Hälfte, steht die Jacke am Saum auseinander.
- Bei dehnbaren Stoffen den Beleg mit Vlieseline verstärken, sonst wellt sich die Kante entlang des Bandes.
- Den Schieber vor der Quernaht öffnen und beiseiteschieben, damit die Nadel nicht auf Metall trifft.
- Metall- und Krampenverschlüsse nicht bügeln. Bei Spiralverschlüssen nur mit Tuch und niedriger Stufe.
- Beim Waschen den Verschluss schließen, dann verzieht sich das Band nicht und die Zähne haken sich nicht in anderer Wäsche fest.

How do I stop the slider scratching a chin?
A small fabric tab over the upper end, or a piece of facing reaching past the slider. Either costs little effort and makes a jacket far more comfortable.
Which needle do I need?
A universal needle in a suitable size; across several layers a denim needle. Never sew over the teeth themselves — a needle breaks or bends there.
What is the box at the bottom for?
That box takes the pin and holds both halves together while the fastener is closed. It is the part that makes a separating jacket possible at all.
