3 mm of coil width — narrow enough for fine wovens, strong enough for the slider to grip securely. Topstitching sits best three to five millimetres beside the teeth: too close and the slider brushes your seam, too far and the fabric throws a ripple over the tape.

Sewing tips

Which presser foot do I need?
A zip foot. It runs beside the teeth rather than over them, so your seam comes close enough without the foot riding up and the stitching wandering.
The slider sticks — what helps?
Usually fabric or a thread is caught between the teeth; ease it out rather than forcing it. If it still runs stiff, a little candle wax on the teeth helps.
How does metal differ from coil?
Metal teeth sit separately on the tape; a coil runs continuously. Metal reads stronger and more visible, a coil stays lighter and more flexible — on thin fabrics the calmer choice.
How does it look tidy inside?
A facing or lining covers the tape. Without either, finish your seam allowances with overlock or zigzag beforehand, or they fray beside the tape.
