Felt has no grain. Felty cuts in any direction, and the edge stays closed. It ships as a roll 25 cm wide and 3 m long. The stated weight per square metre is 210 g/m².
Washable at 30 °C: appliqué survives on clothing that goes into the machine regularly. The felt is dense enough to embroider and soft enough to cut and drape — the whole art of a good embroidery felt lies between those two. Before the first design on a new fabric, a test piece with the same material pays off.

Sewing tips

Frequently asked questions
Does the cut edge fray?
No. Felt is not a weave but a needled surface — it has no grain and no warp that could unravel. That is why a cut edge needs no finishing.
Can I embroider on it?
Yes, by machine as much as by hand. A stabiliser belongs under the felt, otherwise stitch density draws the surface together and the design ripples.
What do I cut it with?
Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter. Blunt blades drag fibres out of the surface, and the edge then looks ragged even though felt cannot actually fray.
What do I do with offcuts?
Keep them. Felt offcuts store indefinitely, do not fray and are plenty for letters, small shapes and badges — work that only needs strips anyway. A shoebox of felt offcuts is worth its weight in any workroom.
