Sulky supplies Felty in over twenty colours, from muted naturals to neon. 3 m on the roll, 25 cm wide. For small hoops you cut it down accordingly. Its weight per square metre is 210 g/m².
For embroidery a stabiliser belongs underneath, otherwise stitch density draws the felt together. The felt is dense enough to embroider and soft enough to cut and drape — the whole art of a good embroidery felt lies between those two. Before the first design on a new fabric, a test piece with the same material pays off.

Sewing tips

Frequently asked questions
Does the cut edge fray?
No. Felt is not a weave but a needled surface — it has no grain and no warp that could unravel. That is why a cut edge needs no finishing.
How thick is the felt?
Dense enough to hold its shape and thin enough for a sewing machine to handle without effort. For appliqué on clothing that is exactly the right range.
Does it suit children?
Very well. Nothing frays, nothing needs finishing, and scissors are tool enough. For first sewing projects it is the simplest material choice. The result also looks tidy at the first attempt.
What do I do with offcuts?
Keep them. Felt offcuts store indefinitely, do not fray and are plenty for letters, small shapes and badges — work that only needs strips anyway. A shoebox of felt offcuts is worth its weight in any workroom.
