For appliqué, felt has one unbeatable advantage: it does not fray. A cut edge stays an edge, with no finishing, no turning under, no zigzag. That opens up shapes which would cost a lot of work in woven cloth.

Felty is made to be stitched. The polyester needle felt keeps its shape, takes washing and comes in many colours — as a roll for larger work and as an assortment of sheets when you work with changing colours.

Put a stabiliser underneath while stitching. Without that layer the stitch density draws the felt together, and a round label turns wavy. The edge itself needs nothing further afterwards.

Good to know

Does the edge need finishing?

No, felt does not fray. An edge cut with scissors or a rotary cutter stays as it is — which saves the entire finishing step on appliqué and labels.

Why put a stabiliser under the felt?

Because stitch density otherwise draws the felt together. The material gives way and the design ripples. A stabiliser underneath absorbs the pull and keeps the area flat until the design is finished.

Roll or assortment?

The roll pays off when you work a lot in one colour. The assortment of several sheets suits changing colours better — for appliqué on children's clothing, for instance.
