3 mm of coil width — narrow enough for fine wovens, strong enough for the slider to grip securely. On stretch fabrics, lay a strip of interfacing or a narrow stay tape into the seam allowance, or that edge stretches as you sew and ripples later. On firm wovens it is unnecessary.

Sewing tips

Frequently asked questions
What does closed-end mean?
This fastener is closed at the bottom: the slider runs onto a fixed stop and both halves stay joined. Your piece opens only along the teeth, never completely.
Centred or concealed?
Set centred, both lines of topstitching show evenly; concealed, only one remains visible. Trousers usually take concealed, bags and cushions the centred version.
Do I need two sliders?
Closed-end fasteners carry one, and that suffices — two sliders only make sense on long, separating fasteners, such as coats you want to open from the bottom.
How far should the topstitching sit?
About three to five millimetres beside the teeth. Too close and the slider brushes your seam; too far and the fabric throws a ripple over the tape.
