Description

Black works on nearly any fabric without long comparison. This fastener disappears on dark cloth and draws a deliberate line on pale cloth. Tooth length comes to 40 cm. Lay it against your piece before cutting and you will see at once whether the opening sits right.

At 5 mm the coil is strong enough for sweat jackets and bags, yet still light enough not to drag at your fabric. Too long, and you shorten it from the top: cut, fold the tape into your seam allowance, set a new stop with hand stitches. From the bottom you cannot — that is where the box and pin sit.

What Separating Zip 40 cm Black is suitable for

  • Children's jackets, because the piece goes on and off easily.
  • Cardigans, because a fastener replaces a button placket.

Sewing tips

  • Länge am fertigen Schnittteil messen, nicht am Schnittmuster — Nahtzugaben und Saum verändern die gebrauchte Länge.
  • Reißverschlussfuß verwenden. Mit ihm kommt die Naht dicht an die Zähne, ohne dass der Fuß aufläuft.
  • Vor dem Annähen beide Seiten gleich hoch ausrichten und heften. Verschiebt sich eine Hälfte, steht die Jacke am Saum auseinander.
  • Bei dehnbaren Stoffen den Beleg mit Vlieseline verstärken, sonst wellt sich die Kante entlang des Bandes.
  • Den Schieber vor der Quernaht öffnen und beiseiteschieben, damit die Nadel nicht auf Metall trifft.
  • Metall- und Krampenverschlüsse nicht bügeln. Bei Spiralverschlüssen nur mit Tuch und niedriger Stufe.
  • Beim Waschen den Verschluss schließen, dann verzieht sich das Band nicht und die Zähne haken sich nicht in anderer Wäsche fest.

Which presser foot should I use?

A zip foot. It runs beside the teeth rather than over them, so your seam comes close enough and keeps an even distance.

How do I stop the slider scratching a chin?

A small fabric tab over the upper end, or a piece of facing reaching past the slider. Either costs little effort and makes a jacket far more comfortable.

Metal or plastic — which is better?

Plastic is lighter, more flexible and quieter; metal reads stronger and takes more strain. Sweat jackets do fine with plastic; for coats and workwear, metal serves better.

Does a separating zip suit bags?

Rarely. A closed-end one serves better there, or your bag opens at the bottom. Separating only pays when two parts really should come apart.
