A fine plastic coil of 3 mm on a polyester tape. The upper tape end disappears into the seam allowance of your facing or waistband; fold it outwards so it cannot jam under the slider. Sew with a universal needle — never across the coil itself, where a needle breaks.

Sewing tips
Ein spezieller Nähfuß für nahtverdeckte Reißverschlüsse ist praktisch Pflicht — er rollt die Spirale auf und führt die Naht direkt darunter.
Der Verschluss wird eingenäht, BEVOR die Naht darunter geschlossen wird. Das ist umgekehrt zum normalen Reißverschluss.
Vor dem Nähen die Spirale mit dem Bügeleisen auf niedriger Stufe flach ausrollen, dann kommt die Naht nah genug an die Zähne.
Beide Seiten von oben nach unten nähen, nicht gegenläufig — sonst verzieht sich die eine Seite gegen die andere.
Am unteren Ende so weit nähen, wie der Fuß kommt, dann den Rest der Naht mit normalem Fuß schließen und die letzten Zentimeter von Hand verriegeln.
Bei dehnbaren Stoffen ein schmales Formband oder Vlieseline in die Nahtzugabe legen, damit die Kante gerade bleibt.
Zum Waschen schließen und nicht direkt über den Schieber bügeln.

Frequently asked questions
Should I press the coil first?
It helps a great deal. Roll the coil flat with an iron on a low setting, then your seam comes close enough to the teeth and the fastener disappears fully into the seam.
Which length do I need?
Measure the opening on your finished pattern piece, not on the paper pattern. The stated length is tooth length; the tape above it disappears into your seam allowance.
Can I shorten it?
From the top yes: cut it off, fold the tape into your seam allowance and set a new stop with a few hand stitches. From the bottom you cannot, that is where the fixed stop sits.
How does it look tidy inside?
A facing or lining covers your seam allowances and the tape. If you have neither, finish those allowances with overlock or zigzag beforehand, or they fray beside the tape.
