Amethyst belongs among the tones that work particularly well on grey and charcoal, where a fine contrast appears. One skein of 8 m. Its 6 strands lie loosely together and pull out one at a time. The skein is sold singly.
Stranded cotton is meant for hand work: cross stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch — everything made without a machine. A hand embroidery thread without a special purpose: it works on counted fabric, linen and cotton weaves alike. Before washing the finished piece a colour test on a scrap pays off. Part-used skeins are best kept in your box with their band.

Sewing tips

Frequently asked questions
How do I divide the thread?
Pull the number of strands you want out of the skein one at a time, then lay them side by side again. Pull several at once and you get knots instead of strands — the commonest beginner's mistake.
How do I take thread out of the skein?
Do not pull the skein apart; draw the end out gently. A skein is wound so the thread runs free from one side and tangles from the other.
Can I machine embroider with it?
No. Stranded cotton is too thick and too soft for an embroidery machine, and its strands would separate in the needle eye. Machines take fine polyester thread; stranded cotton stays reserved for hand work.
Do I need an embroidery hoop?
For larger designs yes. A hoop keeps fabric evenly tensioned so stitches come out the same size. For a few centimetres of stitching the effort does not pay.
