Steel grey is a mid grey with a slight blue cast. It reads cooler and more technical than a neutral grey. Its length is 45 cm. That is tooth length; the tape above it disappears into your seam allowance.
Metal-tooth fasteners carry separate teeth instead of a continuous coil. At 5 mm they run strong, sound audible and give a jacket a solid character. Sold singly. Measure the front edge on your finished pattern piece, hem to neckline, and deduct seam allowances — on paper that measurement rarely holds.
What Teilbare Reißverschlüsse Stahlgrau is suitable for
- Zipped hoodies, because the fastener can run up into the hood.
- Between-season jackets, because they open quickly.
- Rain jackets, because a separating fastener frees the whole front.
Sewing tips

Frequently asked questions
Can I shorten it?
From the top yes: cut it, fold the tape into your seam allowance and set a new stop with a few hand stitches. From the bottom you cannot — that is where the box and pin sit.
Do I need a facing?
It makes the edge tidy and covers the tape. On stretch fabrics reinforce it with interfacing, or your front edge ripples along the tape.
Does a separating zip suit bags?
Rarely. A closed-end one serves better there, or your bag opens at the bottom. Separating only pays when two parts really should come apart.
How should I store fasteners?
Flat and closed, ideally sorted by length. Stored folded, the tape keeps that crease, and you see it later along the sewn-in edge.
